Photographer’s Statement

I first exhibited photos from the “Kabukicho Nights” series in 2013 at the M2 Gallery in Tokyo (before the Red Photo Gallery came into existence). It was the second photography series I had ever shown, after Facing Shibuya, which I exhibited from 2011-2012.

Although I was fascinated by Shibuya at the time (and still am), I was also excited to photograph nights in Kabukicho, Tokyo’s most famous Red Light district, using a flash and film. It was a bit of a dangerous endeavor, but exciting. I continued to visit Kabukicho to photograph for some time after 2012. Eventually, though, I stopped going; maybe I had changed, but I decided to move on to other things. The many images I had taken just slept as unprinted negatives in the back of my closet. And that was that.

Now looking back to these images from nine or ten years ago, I see that the world is a different place. While some parts of Kabukicho remain the same, much has been paved over, or redesigned. The Tokyo Olympics have come to Japan and gone. Covid came to Japan in 2019 and lingers on. Thinking back to those nights wandering around Kabukicho, I am now filled with a sense of nostalgia. It really has become a time that is lost.

The photographs in this exhibition, shot from 2012-2014, will likely be the last from the series I will exhibit. Like the original Kabukicho Nights series exhibited in 2013, they show life in the Red Light district from the perspective of a foreigner (me), whom the subjects of the photographs likely assumed was just a tourist visiting Japan. But then again, I don’t think they were wrong. In many ways, I still feel like a “tourist” here, even after having lived in Japan for 20+ years…

この展示について

初めて「Kabukicho Nights」を展示したのは、2013年で、「Red Photo Gallery」が創業される前の「M2ギャラリー」でした。私の最初の展示「Facing Shibuya」(2011-2012）の次の展示でした。

当時（今でも）私は渋谷に魅了されていましたが、日本の最も有名な風俗街の一つである歌舞伎町を、フィルムとフラッシュを使って撮影することに興味がわいてきました。少し危険な場所でしたが、心を掻き立てられました。2012年以降も、歌舞伎町を撮りに行きましたが、途中で行くのをやめてしまいました。私が変わったせいかもしれませんが、別のことをやろうと思ったからです。その歌舞伎町の写真は、ネガのまま、しばらく押し入れの中で眠っていました。

9、10年経った今、その写真を見ると世界が変わった感じがします。歌舞伎町のその当時のまま残っているところもありましたが、舗装されたり、建て直されたりしたところもありました。また、その当時は、東京オリンピックの前でしたが、今はもう終わっていて、当時は無かったCOVIDが2019年に始まって、今もまだ終息が付いていません。これらの写真を振り返ってみると、懐かしく感じます。今ではもう無くなってしまった時代となりました。

歌舞伎町の夜の写真シリーズ「Kabukicho Nights」の中で、今回の展示はおそらく最後になると思います。2013年の展示と同じように、今回の展示は、外国人(私)の視点からの風俗街の描写です。この写真を撮らせていただいた多くの方からは、私はただの日本の観光客だと思われたでしょう。でも、間違いではないと思います。日本に20年以上住んでいても、色々な意味で、まだ観光客という意識があります。。。
